If you have a skunk in your yard, you will know the moment you smell the noxious smell that critter leaves behind. Used as a defense mechanism, skunks spray that funky-smelling musk when startled, and they are easily startled. Unfortunately, that musk will linger on everything from concrete to your dog’s fur.

You may have tried the old wives’ tale of a tomato juice bath, but all that will result in is some funky-smelling wasted tomato juice going down the drain. This remedy is a myth.

The very real concoction that will actually help remove skunk smell is effective on skin, fur, and solid surfaces. You may have to apply more than one, but this mixture is one of the quicker ways to rid a surface, person, or pet of that horrid smell.

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap

  1. Mix ingredients in a spray bottle and apply to the affected area.
  2. Leave it on for a few minutes.
  3.  Rinsing it away with water.

Note: You will want to use this remedy short after mixing it inside the bottle. If you let it sit longer, the pressure can build up and explode the spray bottle.

As this mixture uses peroxide, using it on clothing is not advised. Luckily, the smell from clothing should wash out after a few washes. You can help it along by adding some white vinegar to your load of laundry.
