If you suspect you have bed bugs, you may be wondering if you can get rid of them on your own. You may have heard that washing your sheets can help get rid of bed bugs. While washing your sheets is a step you must take, the truth is that washing your sheets alone is merely a temporary solution and cannot get rid of bed bugs.

Bed Bugs Can Lay Their Eggs on Other Surfaces.

While the name bed bug implies that these insects live on your bed, that is not the only place they can reside and lay their eggs. Bed bugs can lay their eggs on a variety of surfaces. This can include clothing, wood furniture, baseboards, carpets, upholstered furniture, and toys. Because of this, it is practically impossible to just wash away bed bugs off items and surfaces.

You’d be surprised at the unexpected hiding spots of bed bugs.

Your Dryer May Not Be Hot Enough.

Washing sheets and clothing to eliminate bed bugs can only work if the dryer is hot enough. The average dryer will reach around 125 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. To kill bed bugs – adult, juvenile, or eggs – temperatures must reach 141-degree Fahrenheit.

If your machine can reach 141 degrees Fahrenheit, sheets and clothing need at least 60 minutes on high heat in the dryer to kill bed bugs. Some clothing fabrics are not designed to be thrown in the dryer or exposed to high heat. While it isn’t a bad idea to go ahead and throw your bedsheets in the dryer to kill any bed bug eggs that may be on them, the method may not be as effective as you believe.

Professional Treatments Are Quicker and More Effective.

Professional treatments, such as fumigation or heat treatment, are generally more effective, which leads to total bed bug elimination in your home more quickly. You can trust that a professional exterminator has access to the right tools to kill bed bugs anywhere they hide around your home or office.
